Income Tax Return Filing

Individual and corporate income tax returns prepared and filed accurately with the IRD — on time, every time, with every relief and credit properly claimed.

Every person or company registered for income tax in Sri Lanka (i.e. holding a TIN) is required to file an annual income tax return, even if no tax is ultimately payable. You must file if your annual income exceeds Rs 1,800,000 from any source, if you have business, rental, or investment income of any amount, or if you want to claim a refund of excess APIT or withholding tax deducted during the year.

For Year of Assessment 2025/26, the first Rs 1,800,000 of annual income is tax-free, with the balance taxed progressively at 6%, 18%, 24%, 30% and 36%. The annual return is due by 30 November following the tax year, with any final balance payable by 31 August and quarterly instalments due on 15 August, 15 November, 15 February and 15 May for those with business or investment income.

We prepare and file returns for individuals, sole proprietors, partnerships and companies — reconciling your APIT and WHT credits, applying eligible reliefs, and making sure your return is filed correctly and on time.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to file if I have no tax to pay?

If you’re registered for income tax (you have a TIN), you should file a return even with no tax payable — a nil return avoids unnecessary IRD correspondence and keeps your record clean.

What’s the deadline for filing my income tax return?

The annual return for Y/A 2025/26 is due by 30 November 2026. Any final balance of tax owed is due earlier, by 31 August 2026.

I’m employed and my employer deducts APIT — do I still need to file?

If your only income is employment income already fully taxed under APIT and it doesn’t exceed the relevant threshold, you may not need to file — but if you have any other income (rental, business, investment) or want to claim a refund, you likely do. We can confirm your specific position.

Can you help if I’m several years behind on filing?

Yes. We regularly help clients catch up on overdue returns and manage any resulting IRD correspondence.
